I was always said not to use pubdate index like that, so the issue is old, but
maybe unimarc specific.
It is working only when you use a date in the advanced search filter

By the way: If you or Galen ask it, I can try to split the patch, with non
functional changes (comments...) in a separate patch. But I prefer not to, if
it is not required, because 
- I could do a mistake and break the patch, 
- I won't have time to work on Koha this week.
