Yes, you should definitely be able to renew. I'm unable to reproduce this
problem. When I check something out with a loan period of 4 days and "No
renewal before" set to 5, I can renew immediately.

I have no idea what might cause this problem for you.

Could you supply a screenshot of the checkout page? What exactly is displayed
in the columns "Due date" and "Renew"?
