Another thing to consider: the dollar-sign (and also the pipe-character) is
really awkward to type in several non-English keyboard layouts. For example, in
Finnish and Swedish layouts, typing the dollar-sign requires both hands:
AltGr+4. (The same applies to the pipe-char)
