Nice work around.  I had to change to:

.newsitem {
 max-height: 40px !important;
 overflow:hidden;
 transition: max-height 10s ease-in;
}

.newsitem:hover {
 max-height: 500px !important;
 transition: max-height 5s ease-out;
}

The #news ID doesn't work because the articles are numerated like "news32"
