Hm, I didn't phrase my question well :)

I think both happen from the staff detail screen, but are different features: 

If you are using  "New > New child record" it's not possible possible to
automatically add the vol. no., as this feature works on record level. You can
put the information manually in 773$g

EasyAnalytics work on item level - so the information about vol./ no. should be
stored in the serial enumeration field of the host record's item. I just
checked, this also shows on the child record's item. But it's not added to the
773 field automatically and will not show up on exporting.

So I think the latter might be the problem.
