At some point before 3.18, this bug has been sorted out; it is fixed in 3.18.4.
The language now on the patron's holds tab in circulation.pl or moremember.pl
is "Item is in transit from [branch] since [date]. 

Also, bug 13122 may have had something to do with resolving this issue.
