The warnings are unavoidable, unless we change the behavior that falls back to
the record itemtype if there is no item itype ( even though item-level_itypes
is enabled ). 

I think are actually testing the cases that specifically triggers this error
condition.

Either way, I think the issue is outside the scope of this bug. We should
decide whether or not this is a bug that needs fixed on a separate report.
