Rebase of Marcel's earlier patch

Rebased against the changes in login - NB the test plan includes testing the
timeout in raw_connection- however I'm not sure thats now meaningful - if the
user fails to login the connection will be dropped after the rejection response
is sent. There will be no connection to timeout
