Hi Kyle,
I tried the follwing:

Group [% '<i>' _ added.title | $KohaSpan id => 'myId' class => 'name' _ '</i>' 
%] created.
...but it results in a template error. 

A workaround would be:

[% myvalue = added.title | $KohaSpan id => 'myId' class => 'name' %]
Group [% '<i>' _ myvalue _ '</i>'  %] created.
