I don't think we should make this a requirement at the moment until
Elasticsearch has left experimental status and this has been added to the
coding guidelines as a requirement. For now, I think, not breaking
Elasticsearch functionality with new code would be enough. Other things can be
dealt with later.

This is something we have been asked about for an awful long time, it would be
sad to see the first steps abandoned.
