It will work, but I am wondering if something like that would not be more
readable:

my $borr = sprintf( "%s%s%s (%s)",
    $data->{surname} || '',
    $data->{firstname} && $data->{surname} ? ', ' : '',
    $data->{firstname} || '',
    $borrowernumber );

What do you think?
