Yeah, I think it quickly became a pattern in a few backends, make sense to move
to core and prevent every backend having to impliment their own version.

I do however still like the idea of introducing hooks in a few places in
circulation, could make for some interesting plugins and enable alterations to
the generic flow if a particular backend needed to make such modifications.
