This works, and I'm not against it.. but I can't help but feel there must be a
simpler approach.

I'm going to go away and work on an alternative implementation as a way of
getting my head around this code as part of a SO/QA effort.

I'll be using some of this as foundation work.. so see it as a golfing effort.
