The "clear" link deletes the date in the field but doing so shouldn't have any
affect on the batch update--empty values are assumed to be unchanged.

So I assume it's the "delete value" checkbox which is in question. We can make
a quick change to the template to hide it for the expiration date field but I
wonder if a more complete fix wouldn't be to make the batch patron modification
tool auto-calculate the expiration date if the user checked the "delete value"
check box? I feel like that would make the process more consistent to the way
editing an individual patron works.
