You should check the return of AddReturn in do_checkin

C4/SIP/ILS/Transaction/Checkin.pm
 75     my ($return, $messages, $issue, $borrower) = AddReturn($barcode,
$branch, undef, $return_date);  

I bet $messages contains the useful info.
