I think there should be no brackets as the field should end with a colon (:)
added by the cataloger. There are exmaples in the library of congress
documentation: http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd246.html
It also states "Subfield $i precedes subfield $a at the beginning of the
field.", so we are on the right track here.
