Sorry team I really cannot seem to enable strict_sql_modes and reproduce that
error, I tried a bunch of different things including MariaDB specific things
but I couldn't reproduce.

I've reworked the patch a bit, and really curious if it stops that error from
showing. Please test and let me know how it goes.
