I think it might actually be something else at play here:

chine and chiene

i = ie + auto-truncate

pain and paien + auto-truncate

Can you check if turning of QueryAutoTruncate?

Thinking about something like this:

  18 equivalent iíìîịĩĭįǐȉȋ
  19 equivalent ï(ie)
