Tough to know sometimes whether my passion and persistence is a bug or a
feature ;). 

Apologies for the verbosity, but hopefully the ultimate outcome is useful.
You'll probably get slightly better performance overall by sticking with Plack
and increasing the ProxyTimeout value. 

I might open a bug report in the near future to add ProxyTimeout to the Apache
Plack configuration. I just want to leave it a few days to see if the Apache
httpd community come back with any answers first.
