I suppose we could extend the patch to catch all cases where profile_id is set
to '' instead of 0

The errors comes from save(), which seems called by label-edit-template.pl and
patroncards/edit-template.pl which are very loose with their assignments of
profile_id.

But beside that, you'll have to be specific.  We coded (and use) this patch in
its simplest form, to avoid the problems.  But we're not rearchitecturing the
underlying issues.
