At the moment, this is a feature.  A subject search is a search separate from
all of the other fields.  The fact that the fields are all together in one form
is misleading and should be reported as a separate bug (and may already be).

If you enter a subject search without any other fields filled in, you'll see
that it presents you with a list of subjects to choose from.

It might be a nice feature to also use the subject field to limit results along
with other search terms, but that is not currently done in the search code.
