For the calendar widget qua date-picker, switching to the jQuery UI
widget makes sense for the reasons you've mentioned.  I do have a
question -- have you checked whether it can be made to work as a
stand-alone calendar widget that is not tied to a form's input field,
e.g., the way the current calendar widget is used on the holidays
page?
