Been there, tried that ... :)  Without the '-x' gives systematic failure...

I'm also a little concerned that I do not have enough background on 
syspreferences when it comes to (what I think are defaults):

CatalogModuleRelink "Do not"
LinkerKeepStale  "Do not"
LinkerModule    "Default"
LinkerOptions   --blank--
LinkerRelink  "Do"

and any associated scripts. On 3.6.1 I used to cron "merge-authorities" 
every day at 3.00am but have not done this with 3.8 ... have I screwed up?
