I'm not the definitive marc21 guy, but your reasoning sounds logical,
so, unless someone has an objection, let's fix that !

Sounds perfectly valid for Unimarc, and probably for marc21

If no marc21 specialist react to your suspected error, I suggest that
you do a patch just adding the dissertation-note, and keeping
melm 502        Material-type

as it is.
