Bob Birchall Calyx -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [Koha] Reminder to Libraries using Koha to participate in the 2018 Library Automation Perceptions survey Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2019 14:54:53 +0000 From: Marshall Breeding To: Koha at lists.katipo.co.nz (koha at lists.katipo.co.nz) To all libraries using Koha: The 2018 edition of the International Library Automation Perceptions survey is underway and will be open until January 20, 2019. Please take a few minutes to respond to this important survey regarding the technologies you use in your library. This survey, now in its twelfth annual iteration, provides an opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. As open source software supported both by the general community and by a variety of different service organizations, some special considerations apply to Koha. In the libraries.org directory, Koha is represented by a combination of the name Koha and the primary support organization involved. (For example Koha - Catalyst IT, Koha -- ByWater Solutions). Libraries relying entirely on community support or internal resources are represented as Koha - Independent. If there are any special support arrangements not covered by these conventions, just mention that in the comments area of the survey. In this way the survey will be able to reflect both the functionality of the Koha software and the quality of support provided. This model of representing libraries using Koha isn't ideal, but is a pragmatic approach that aggregates all users of Koha while also segregating the different support scenarios. Participation in this survey will help amplify the visibility of Koha among those interested in library automation. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, it's the comments offered that provide the most insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, redacted to conceal text that might identify the individual or organization responding. The raw data for the survey will not be shared, but reports are available that provide a variety of ways to view results. Please help your fellow librarians who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. If you have responded in previous years, please respond again this year to help identify any trends regarding improvement or worsening of the products or support services. For more information about the survey, for instructions on how to participate, and to see results of previous year's survey reports, see: http://librarytechnology.org/web/breeding/AutomationSurvey/ I hope that all libraries using Koha will respond. Feel free to forward this request to any other library-related list. You can view the report summarizing the results of last year's survey, including data from all previous editions, here: https://librarytechnology.org/perceptions/2017/ Please let me know if there are any questions regarding the survey. I am volunteering at a not for profit org in Melbourne and they would like to set up a library from scratch. I knew Koha existed from TAFE library course and thought it would be an easy download and I would be able to show them how it works. However, I am struggling as I am on a windows 10 and I can?t find easy to use instructions on how to install. I did download a virtual program and then used some instructions but I keep getting an error as I think they are based for an old windows operating system. Is there someone that can point me to step by step at all? I am tech savy but not Linux, virtual, Debian, etc tech savy. Any help would be appreciated as I do want to help get their library up and running with as little cost as possible. Regards Spiri. It is a very difficult system to install, even though it is a wonderful program and works well for a good-sized library. How big is the collection you are proposing to automate? Will it grow significantly? Do you need to have web facility in the program? Who are your clients? I am a retired librarian, have been working voluntarily in several libraries over past ten years. I have been using a program in some of these, which is relatively easy to install and set up, which suits a collection of up to 80000 titles. I am in Melbourne, happy to chat with you about this if you wish. 0401257647. As Lynn mentioned, there are other applications out there that might suit the situation you?re in; they?ll help you set up a library with some basic functionality and minimal setup. However, if you have the time, energy and inclination, it is well worth trying to set up a Koha system: You?ll be learning some valuable skills in Linux and related technologies and also getting a good look at how a library automation system works. There are thousands of web sites out there with introductions on how to use various Linuxes (a quick Google search sent me to this one, for example: https://fusion809.github.io/linux-for-windows-users/). You?ll likely have to do a lot of reading before you?re up to trying to install your first Linux system. Once you have that under your belt, you still have to install Koha: There is a lot of community-driven documentation (the wiki at https://koha-community.org/, manuals at https://koha-community.org/documentation/, the database schema at http://schema.koha-community.org/, and so on) so again you?ll need to do a lot of reading. Either way, good luck! Regards, Carlos.
