I quite agree with that rule.
It seems that it is in Perl Best Practises book to avoid such implicit 
assignation.
Since when adding or debuging, you could then misuse $_ or reassign it.
In the same area, another Best Practise is to use pretty understandable 
variable name : $isbn rather than $t
But well a string is a string....
