A couple immediate comments:

[1] It appears that 'place hold' button is always displayed on the
search results, even if the staff user does not have the
reserveforothers permission.

[2] Placing hold requests is not the only reason why a staff member
might want to add results to a list.  Consequently, if we're going to
add checkboxes to the search results, it should be for all hits.  I
could imagine that we could get pretty fancy with the selecting -
select all displayed hits, select only the ones that can have holds
placed, etc.
