The 3.2.x branch is in a string freeze for the 3.2.10 release as of
the time of this email. I'm a few hours late, but needed to catch up
on pushing some changes to the main repo.

Keep in mind that 3.2.10 will most likely be the final release of the
3.2.x branch.

Hello everyone, I'm conan (aka Fernando Canizo) and I've been around in
kohadev for a couple of months now, so I will not go further on my
introduction since probably we'are all the same here and there ;)

Some days ago I tried a spanish install with 'translate install
es-ES' and got an error which I cannot reproduce now. But it wasn't a
very helpful message.

Magnuse in #koha told me about using poedit to look for errors and also
to look for inconsistences in %s numbers on translated and original
strings.

I found that poedit wasn't giving me the right line numbers so I
resorted to 'msgfmt -c' which pointed me to the errors.

Then I corrected one bad translation I happened to find, incorrect
number of %s in original and translated strings, and also splitted %s's
which had spaces between the '%' and the 's'.

You can see the changes in this paste which is a 'git log -p b..a' of
my local commits:

The thing is I kind of mixed everything and probably that's not the way
to work properly.

So I'm asking what are the steps to properly fix this kind of errors
(translating errors and inconsistency errors).

Should I trust always git repo? Or pootle site?

In any case, how do I upload my changes?

Using pootle is cumbersome for me, I find the workflow more straight
making my changes locally. Also why pootle claims 100% spanish
translation when there are near 1000 fuzzy strings?

I'm not the only translator so I guess I'll be shouting in
koha-translate.

But let me ask another one: why are we using this method? Cannot we
rely on git doing the merging? I've found some of the people working on
spanish translation is somewhat self cutted out from mailing list and
are hard to reach.

Mostly because a lot of the translators don't know git, and pootle
offers them a low barrier to entry.
But I'm sure nothing is set in stone and if we can work out a way to
make it easier for everyone then that would be awesome :)

Inconsistency between number of %s placeholder in original English 
strings and
translated ones can break the whole translation process and so leave Koha
templates in an incomplete state. Translators have to be very careful when
dealing with %s. The reason is that with the switch to 
Template::Toolkit, %s
placeholders have two usages: (1) usual placeholders replaced by program in
strings with values, (2) placeholders for TT conditional directives.

I suggest this translation workflow:

1. You search in your language .po files new strings, ie string with 
'msgstr'
    equal to "".

2. You search in your language .po files fuzzy strings, ie strings with a
    'fuzzy' proposed translation based on previously translated strings. 
You
    have to be very careful with those strings because the number of %s
    placeholders is very ofter wrong.

3. Test your translation with:

    ./translate install es-ES

    Verify that the installation process is displayed as 'terminated'. 
If it
    isn't, chances are that a handful of your templates are not usable.

    As pointed by Chris, when bug 6464 enhancement patch will be pushed, 
the
    translation install process will show you all inconsistent %s 
placeholders.

    Warning: This is the translator responsibility to verify that its
    translation files can be installed properly.

Pootle site.

Upload you changes on Pootle. Always ask to 'Overwrite the current file 
if it
exists' otherwise you will finish with thousand of 'suggestions' to 
validate on
Pootle. If you want to be allowed to upload .po file on Pootle, you need 
you
give me your Pootle user ID.

Last but not least, this workflow (translation done locally and 
uploaded) will
work for you if you are the unique translator. It you are several persons
translating Koha into Spanish, you have to use directly Pootle, or to 
find a
way to coordinate your efforts.

Try 6464 patch and if it doesn't work for a string give me its msgid.

When .po file installation fails, you don't have this message at the end
of the process:

   The install seems to be successful.

Take a look at this scenario:

   1. April 22nd, you grab 3.4.0 es-ES .po files from Koha git
      repository and you start translating.
   2. During April and May and June another translator works on Pootle
      Spanish files.
   4. May 10th, and June 10th, es-ES .po are updated with strings from
      current 3.4 version (my job).
   5. June 12th, you upload your files.

With this scenario, all the work done by the other translator during
(2) will be overwritten by your translation, and your translation will
not contain the last updated strings.

So if you want to work locally, which is very understandable, outside
Pootle, you have to coordinate with other translators, and you have to
regularly upload you files in sync with string freeze announcement
released by the Release Manager.

Because Pootle is a tool with its own shortcomings. Its interface is not
particularly intuitive. Koha .po files are very large and we're reaching
Pootle limits and so get some bugs. A complete solution would be to
redesign completely Koha translation framework in order to slim down
drastically .po files which are insanely huge, avoid misusing %s
placeholder as Template::Toolkit directives, and even improve
translatability. I have a lot of ideas and solutions but I have no time
to implement them. It would imply a deep modification of all templates
and even Perl scripts.

Concerning fuzzy strings, this issue is just popping up now! Thank you
Fernando for that. Could you open a bug on Bugzilla? I can confirm that
the problem affects ALL languages. Normally, on the Files page, Pootle
should display a link 'Quick translate' which should show all fuzzy
strings. We don't have it. I will investigate.

We should have a page on Koha wiki explaining exactly the translation
possible workflow. But I haven't enough time to write it. A page like

Git is for developers not for translators. My advice, if you're a solo
translator, work outside Pootle. If there is a team of translators, work
on Pootle OR design your own workflow.

In theory, we could automatically synchronize Pootle files management
with Koha git repository. But it isn't that simple. Any suggestion/patch
is welcome. The difficulty is that Pootle is designed for a standard GNU
.po files and that Koha has its own idiosyncrasies, language code naming
convention, etc. In any case, merging has to be done by Pootle not by
git which don't now how to merge .po file string entries. And it only
works in one direction: We could automatize the way translations get back
into Koha git repository; the other direction can't work.

Spanish translation on pootle is 100% complete, and without fuzzy strings.
We tested it today, found 1 string in opac and 17 on staff that have
mismatched "%",
and 1 in staff with "%_s". We corrected and uploaded into pootle all files.
With those we did "./translate install es-ES" successfully

There are ~1000 fuzzy lines on the files shipped with the distribution
(3.4.1),
you must replace the files on misc/translator/po/es-ES-* with the files on
pootle.

As I've explained earlier, translation files on Pootle are the reference
and are send back to Koha git repository before any new release. So if
you have updated your translation on Pootle, you are insured that it
will be available in next Koha release.

Its most likely a broken template var, done by the translation. I think a
missing %s

But the translators might have better ideas.

I installed also en-GB and that works fine too.

Compairing the two versions of detail.tt (in en-GB and in de-DE) I
noticed that the version in en-GB has much more lines 175 to 75.

It works for me on my devel box with de-DE. Which Koha 3.4 are you
using? It may fail on 3.4.0 and work on 3.4.1. You also could try to
install the de-DE translation files last version from here:

now the strings for bug 3013 are not present in Italian.
I need that Chris Nighswonger inserts the patch in 3.2.x git tree.

After the commit I will update .po file and I will start translation.

Translation files for 3.2 have been updated and contain now new strings 
related to bug 3013. People interested in translating those strings 
should say how many days they need to achieve the job so Chris can 
eventually postpone 3.2.10 release.

I have done extra check on new translation for 3013.
I confirm that the lines that this patch add to translate are only 10-15.
Why so few ?
Because 95% of the new strings are in the files
../cataloguing/value_builder/marc21_field_006.xml and
../cataloguing/value_builder/marc21_field_008.xml

The translate tool ../misc/translator/translate doesn't work
on .xml files.

So in fact the translation for me is done because it is impossible to do.
For me we can release 3.2.10 now.

You should create a bug related to bug 3103. The way #3103 enhancement
has been coded add an untranslatable functionality. It's surprising
since it has been done be someone from Spain!

I don't know what should be Koha community policy on that subject.
Enhancement introducing untranslatable strings should be avoided. It had
already happened in the past with the 'new' system preferences editor
that added preferences descriptions which were untranslatable until
someone (me) wrote a specific parser.

Hi all,

The monthly 3.4.x release is a few days behind schedule. As of 0000
UTC 20 June 2011, 3.4.x is in a string freeze. 27 June 2011 will be
the date of the 3.4.2 release. At this point the only patches that
touch strings which will be accepted are blocker and security fixes.
Non-string patches will still be applied up to the date of the
release.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING 3.2.x EOL
========================================================================
With the release of 3.4.1, the 3.2.x branch is nearing its EOL.
A motion will be made at the August 2011 general IRC meeting to
officially announce EOL for the 3.2.x branch. Unless someone or some entity
steps forward to take over 3.2.x maintenance, this date will mark the
official EOL for the 3.2.x branch. Please keep this in mind when planning
new deployments and upgrades to existing systems.

Highlights of 3.2.10
======================

This release marks over 700 commits since the release of 3.2.0. That
represents nearly 90 commits per month since 3.2.0! Congratulations
are due to the entire community for all of the hard work which has gone
into improving Koha during this release cycle!

Some of the higher profile bugs addressed in this release are:

2246    Label printing doesn't work with Unicode characters (Improved
        work-around rather than a fix.)
3072    'Heading-Main' authority-index breaks authority searching in
        STABLE
4993    ldap search always anonymous when using auth_by_bind
5860    Adding duplicate stocknumber will fail silently
5094    auth_by_bind authentication can fail even if given a correct
        password and userid

System Requirements
======================

    Changes since 3.0:

    * The minimum version of Perl required is now 5.8.8.
    * There are a number of new Perl module dependencies.
      Run ./koha_perl_deps.pl -u -m to get a list of
      any new modules to install during upgrade.

Upgrades
======================

The structure of the acquisitions tables have changed significantly
from 3.0.x.  In particular, the budget hierarchy is quite different.
During an upgrade, a new database table is created called fundmapping
that contains a record of how budgets were mapped.  It is strongly
recommended that users of Koha 3.0.x acquisitions carefully review
the results of the upgrade before resuming ordering in Koha 3.2.x.
