Oh. Good points. The 'persistent' option in PHP/YAZ has more to do with its
being an Apache module than with its being a ZOOM derivative!
I dunno if a Perl API will be able to support such an option, perhaps when
the script is run under mod_perl.. but either way, it doesn't make much of
a difference. Even if the connections to the proxy are not persistent, the
proxy will still know how to maintain proper, persistent connections to the
backend server.

But remember that this is far from automatic in a web environment, Mike.
That is the kind of optimization that the proxy provides, however, and
automatically at that.
