Hi,

I am attaching a presentation about Weblate I gave during the last
Swedish Koha User Group meeting.

Trying to answer you:

> Concrete questions would be:
> - How to find one's way about the Weblate pages

We are using a new feature of Weblate: the categories. It allows us to
have a tree structure. First the project, then the categories and
finally the components.
* https://translate.koha-community.org/projects/
In our case, the project is "Koha".
We are also using Weblate to translate the manual.
* https://translate.koha-community.org/projects/koha/
the categories are the different versions of Koha we maintain
* https://translate.koha-community.org/projects/koha/master/
and the components are the different .po files.

> - How is a translation done, what are the steps to take?

If you want to translate "master" in German, I am suggesting you this
view: https://translate.koha-community.org/projects/koha/master/-/de/
You pick a component, say "messages" then you can select the strings
that are not translated yet "Untranslated strings":
https://translate.koha-community.org/translate/koha/master/messages/de/?q=state:empty
Enter your translation, save. It's done :)

> - What's the difference between proposing or submitting a translation?

Everybody needs an account to contribute. If you have an account but
are not part of a group you can only do suggestions.
People part of a group can submit translations and approve suggestions.
Administrators of a group can manage it (add/remove members)

> - How to find the relevant context of text passages?

See the presentation p.17. There is a "String information" block on
the right of the page when you translate, that give you information
about the file and line number.
For instance this string
https://translate.koha-community.org/translate/koha/master/messages/de/?checksum=febcd4f175883dd4
is at koha-tmpl/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/modules/suggestion/suggestion.tt:1509
Which is this place in the code:
https://gitlab.com/koha-community/Koha/-/blob/master/koha-tmpl/intranet-tmpl/prog/en/modules/suggestion/suggestion.tt#L1509
(bad example, it's not really useful...)

> - Syntax to use when linking to parts of Koha or the Manual?

What do you mean? Do you have an example?

> - What to do if one made a mistake and already submitted the passage in question?

Just edit again and resubmit.

> - What happens if contents of the manual have to be changed, deleted or extended for a new Koha version - are there alerts telling people which passages to look at and work on with priority?

If your question is about the manual you should contact the
documentation team. Especifically Caroline or Aude.

> - After submitting / proposing a translation, what are the following steps and when and how does the translated text passage make its way into a Koha or manual version?

See page 6 of the presentation.
When you submit a translation change it will be part of the Weblate
database then it will be merged with the existing strings during the
night and then be part of the koha-l10n repository.
https://gitlab.com/koha-community/koha-l10n
Which means it is available in the developer environment
(koha-testing-docker) the day after (as well as the sandboxes) you
made the changes.
The next releases will contain it.

> - What does the message "String freeze" in the mailing list mean?

It means that the release maintainers will stop pushing patches with
string changes. That gives time to the translators to fully translate
the version before it is released.
Example:
Release is on 23th
String freeze on 20th
Maintainers will push patches with string changes until 20th. After
that they will only push bug fixes without string changes.
At night, Weblate cronjob script will merge the new strings (from
Koha) and the new translations (from Weblate) and push them to
koha-l10n
=> Weblate has the new strings that were present in the patches from the day
=> Koha will be able to use koha-l10n with the new translations
Translators have 3 days to translate.
On 23th the package maintainer will generate the new debian packages
with the new release of Koha and the last version of koha-l10n (from
the branch, there is one branch in koha-l10n per version of Koha)

> There might be more that I can't think of at present.

Let me know if you have more! :)

Cheers,
Jonathan
