Just curious how the z3950_responder does in terms of performance here (having the older fast reply of Zebra in mind)?

It's a good question. Logically, I think that it would have to be slower. However, I doubt it would be significantly worse. When I query the SRU endpoint from MarcEdit, using z3950_responder.pl with a Unix socket and Elasticsearch, it's still very fast.
