For the sake of simplicity and unblocking this, is there any objection going the way of supporting just ES 6 and ES 7 without a version check? And if someone needs support for the completely non-libre ES 8 they would continue with the more complex solution to have a wide version support. IMHO ES 8 has much less priority so no need to be proactive if it gets us to stall.
I lost track about the patches, is the right one (assuming going with above proposal) this one?: "Bug 25669: [alternate] Use include_type_name parameter in ES calls"
