We do this now, although it may take some trial and error depending on the kind of barcode you have. From our notice template:

<img src="/cgi-bin/koha/svc/barcode?barcode=*[% item.barcode %]*&type=Code39" />

It would definitely be useful to make the process easier but I'm not sure what it would look like.
