Just an idea: could we make it possible to use the matching rules for the duplicate check? I think it would probably work for our use case and would offer some flexibility.
We've had a library ask us to implement exactly this; watch this space :)
We had to do it too... I'll submit my patch here. Hopefully this is similar to what you had in mind.
