I think KohaTable is breaking some functionality from DataTables, because I should be able to do this on a KohaTable: https://datatables.net/reference/api/ajax.reload()
I think KohaTable is using the legacy API and DataTables allowed me to use the current API.
Uploading screenshots to show the different objects returned by DataTable and KohaTable...
OK I figured it out. When using "$( selector ).DataTable();", the return value is the API object. When using KohaTable, the return value is the jQuery object.
