I remember looking at PDF.js a long time ago, but disregarded it for this use case, but it seems that it has advanced quite a bit, especially in the last couple of years. It seems to me that you could provide a protected API endpoint that lets PDF.js request and render small chunks of the PDF from the backend. -- I'm going to re-open this one as I think there's some experimenting that could be done...
