There is a test which verifies that by changing the values for (or disabling/enabling) has_digest and/or takes_days are being recorded (test "SetMessagingPreference detects metadata changes"). I don't quite understand what you mean by them "not being used" or "not needed". They are needed and the UI saves the changes to them and they are being used by the system. I just didn't specifically mention that you need to check that logging tracks their values being changed separately without making other modifications to a message transport.
