I think we need to take a step back to where this dev came from: a demand that it needs to be done in order to have bug 27113 move forward.

I personally would love to see that as I think auto-complete with Elasticsearch would make a great feature, in core and not only a plugin.

Maybe it could be implemented without that using Elasticsearch's existing APIs? Having an Elasticsearch only solution would not be an issue nowadays.
