This could also be solved in a similar way to Bug 39688:

<option selected="selected" value=""> [%- IF ( hold.barcodenumber ) -%] Only item [%- hold.barcodenumber | html -%] [%- ELSE -%] Only item [No barcode] [%- END -%] </option>
