I think our pages are too varied in structure to use Gitlab as an example--different sidebars, different toolbars, etc. Even with an added border, as I did in the mockup, I think it's too jumbled. From a user's perspective I think it's nice to have it always 'anchored' to the very same spot that I can easily focus on.
