The library wants to be able to define local statuses for items, and to control whether or not items with those statuses can have holds placed. We identified an unused subfield (subfield k) in the 952 and used it for this purpose, also creating a new field named otherstatus in the items table. Under Administration, Other Item Status, the library can define new statuses (e.g., Cataloging, Trace, Storage) and mark them holdable or not. These statuses show in both staff and OPAC item listings.
