In our situation records are automatically overwritten/overlaid with a new version of the record from the union catalog every time someone changes/updates the records in the union catalog. In the past, all features altering the MARC record were quite problematic for us. But: we do have MARC overlay rules now :) Maybe a subfield of 942 could be used?
