could someone please paste the code of the 'marc_field() function?

The marc_field() function is part of the MARC integration into PostgreSQL and can not be used separately, since it relies on the internal representation of binary MARC records in the database. The complete MARC code for PostgreSQL will eventually be available under an open source license.
