It actually has a significantly different effect: it breaks phrase searches.

I do think a note is in order that adding stopwords will negatively affect
search functionality of zebra.  We've seen a couple people add a bunch of
stopwords, and then find that typing an exact title into a keyword search no
longer relevance-ranks that title as expected.

I've sent a patch for this, despite the 'wontfix'.
