that's what you should have.
The ?? becoming 4,3,2,1, then disappear. The number shows how many z3950 
server have not answered.
see below to understand why ?? stay as it.

yes.

I don't know. I'm not a shell specialist.
to check, you can :
* open a console.
* launch ./processz3950queue in the console.
* see what happends. When a search starts, you should see a lot of infos 
saying "search started on XX server", "XX results to retrieve from YY 
server"...
