Thanks so much, Jesse. Yup, I did not have an entry for the local
guest host in this virtual machine partition (vserver).

Now "make" completes without error.
And "make test" runs through to completion sans error.

I am now proceeding to "make install".

The manual said Windows XP/SP2 or better so I installed Linux.
