The dropdown query joined item_bundles and grouped by me.itemnumber while selecting all the item columns, which fails when ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY is in effect. It now selects the bundle hosts with a subquery on item_bundles.host, with no grouping. I checked it in KTD with a bundle defined: the inventory tool loads with no error, the "Items bundle" dropdown lists the host, and running the inventory with that bundle selected returns only the bundled item.
