Call for volunteers - Koha Documentation Manager
Hi, While we're discussing project roles, I would like to suggest reviving the position of Documentation Manager, a position which appears to be unfilled at the moment. If I am mistaken and somebody is currently active as DM, I apologize. The documentation manager would be responsible for: * Working with the Koha user community to identify documentation needs. * Organizing the creation and updates of user documentation for Koha 3.x, including manuals, user help embedded in Koha, wikis, etc. * In conjunction with the 3.2 RM and the 3.0 RMaint, updating user documentation that resides in the Koha source tree. * Encouraging the user and developer communities to improve documentation practices. * Discovering and linking to public Koha documentation written outside the aegis of the Koha project. * Encouraging (with the help of the translation manager) the development of user documentation in as many languages as possible. * Maintaining user documentation on the various project websites, including wiki.koha.org, kohadocs.org, and the forthcoming Plone version of www.koha.org. Any volunteers? Comments on the list of responsibilities? Regards, Galen -- Galen Charlton VP, Research & Development, LibLime galen.charlton@liblime.com p: 1-888-564-2457 x709 skype: gmcharlt
I'm throwing my hat into the ring since I've already done so much in this arena. Having written the Koha 3.0 Manual (which is still a work in progress), I have an intimate knowledge of our documentation needs and would love to help manage all further documentation efforts. --- Nicole C. You have my vote About the perimeter of this role: couldn't we consider that it's part of "documentation" to work on the terms and vocabularies used in Koha's interfaces themselves? Would you consider tackling that type of problems too (inconsistencies in the use of certain terms, etc.)? Or do you think it's too far from what "documentation" should be? Nicolas

About the perimeter of this role: couldn't we consider that it's part of "documentation" to work on the terms and vocabularies used in Koha's interfaces themselves? IMHO this responsability is pretty shared with Translation Manager. At least it has impact on that. So wording should be discussed along. And Translation Manager and Doc manager should work hands in hands. Would you consider tackling that type of problems too (inconsistencies in the use of certain terms, etc.)? Or do you think it's too far from what "documentation" should be my 2 cts. -- Henri-Damien LAURENT

I'm happy to support Nicole (particularly in the absence of other candidates!), but just in case there are other candidates, here are my concerns:- 1. What actions will the DM take to make collaboration on the manual easier? At the moment, it's on a google site which can only be edited, downloaded and/or converted by a few, so others apparently can't help make the up-to-date PDFs or whatever is wanted. 2. Do DM candidates have plans for the Online Help system? My goal is to push as hard as possible to get the community to come to a conclusion about the new Koha plone site. Plone has an amazing documentation module that allows for collaborative editing and moderating. This has been my goal all along - I surely didn't want to write the whole manual alone ;) Coming into the game after the initial plone design contest and not knowing all of the details, I'm all for putting up the site with a premade template and then re-opening the contest. This way I can focus on moving the documentation over and then opening it up for help from the entire community!! --- Nicole C. MJ - I just realized what you meant. You mean the inline help in Koha. I have already updated most of that with documentation right from the manual (minus screenshots). I would love a way to bring that in dynamically, but for now I've used the age old method of cut & paste :) It would be great if we were to include links to the right manual pages once they're on the plone site. --- Nicole C.
