Feedback from french translation team about transifex
Hello translators, During the hackfest in Marseille, 2 people worked on transifex with french translations. Their opinion is that we *must* leave pootle in favour of transifex. Both tools shouldn't be compared in terms of usability, features, speed of use,... What's the next step ? How could we reach an agreement on using this tool instead of pootle ? It seems a transifex server can be setup from github or we could decide to use transifex.com directly, (which is free of charge for OpenSource projects) My opinion here is that we could stard with transifex.com, as we can always download all translations, we can easily deal with any evil change, but I'm open to others arguments (and I don't apply to manage all the translation things, so our translation manager has an important opinion ;-) ) -- Paul POULAIN - BibLibre http://www.biblibre.com Free & Open Source Softwares for libraries Koha, Drupal, Piwik, Jasper
My concern with Transifex as a hosted solution has to do with the *massive* updates I have to do. If everything was in one .PO, and you were translating one language, it's no itch, but if you have to upload each .po for each language....no way will I agree to that; we'll do it ourselves first. I'll be taking a look at this this weekend, but I wouldn't count on a switch prior to the 3.12 release. We're in the home stretch; I don't want to disrupt the translators at this part of their work. I wouldn't want to switch to it until we have proven we can stand up our own instance and use it. If we then decide to use the hosted one, we do have an exit if needed in the future. Just my 2 bits 1) I've experience of working with Transifex as part our team's (Ankur Bangla - BN_IN L10N team for all the major GUI desktop apps on GNU/Linux) work. 2) An friend, now an ex-employee of Transifex, who worked for 2 years in the Transifex dev team handling support for Transifex, I have spoken with him and he is willing us to help out. 3) I can host an instance of Transifex CE for our translators. Does Transifex have Apertium integration? I cannot find any information about it. Pootle and Weblate do. I am pondering working on a Koha dictionary in the future and I would hate to lose that option. -- Mirko
