series is a tricky word indeeed.
Because it is both the name for the title of a periodical/journal 
(seriestitle is meant for that),
and the name for what we call in France "Collection" of an editor.
So that, there is a kind of uncomfortable mixture between both.
We need a way to get one or the other. Because the label display for 
each of them should be different (in French).
This is why I sent this patch, and this is why collectiontitle should be 
used in 225 even though the UNIMARC tag in English is Series.

So Yes you are right about UNIMARC spec, and yes, series could be the 
name, but how would you then call the title of a journal ?
